0Y3 | Equity in Legacy: The National Covid Memorial by Marked By Covid
Kristin Urquiza (Yale '03) and Christine Keeves (George Washington '03) co-founded Marked By Covid during the darkest days of the pandemic following the untimely death of Urquiza's father from Covid-19 in June 2020. With the help of Sarah Senk (Yale '03) and Kimberly Jones (Yale '01) they are leading the national movement for pandemic justice and remembrance and setting out to remember every life lost to Covid. Deeply disturbed by the unevenness of pandemic harms, with BIPOC communities like Jones's and Urquiza's shouldering the burden of both death and disability, Marked By Covid is challenging the dominant narrative that the pandemic was "over" even as it continued to claim so many lives. In this presentation, they will discuss the efforts behind the first state-funded memorial, which breaks ground this fall in New Mexico, as well as their newly launched Memorial Matrix, a database and map meticulously capturing commemoration happening in the vanguard of society. Part archive, part instrument for advocacy, the Matrix and National Memorial are redefining whose story gets to be remembered, giving a fuller picture of historical events to future researchers and policy makers. Participants will be able to interact with the augmented reality layer of the Memorial, developed in partnership with Snapchat.
