In 1926, the U.S. Navy launched the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at six universities, including Yale. Although the program later grew to more than 60 schools, it ended at Yale in 1972 during the Vietnam War era. Yet it returned in 2012, and last year Yale received the Department of Defense’s ROTC Partnership Excellence Award, given to only one school each year. What has changed? And what is NROTC, anyway?
