The Known Unknown: Incarceration in America

Since Michelle Alexander’s landmark 2010 book The New Jim Crow opened America’s eyes to the racism underlying its criminal justice system, our understanding of incarceration has shifted. Yet we still fail to understand what it means to be human in prison. Poet Dwayne Betts, arrested at 16 for stealing a car and sentenced to nine years in adult prison, will share how he became the founder of Freedom Reads, an organization that builds libraries in penitentiaries and juvenile centers.
