6Y5 | University Challenges: Promoting Free Expression While Preserving Institutional Autonomy

Jonathan Fanton and John Shattuck, Speakers

Jonathan will remind us of the serious challenges to free expression on college campuses in the late ’60’s and how they ultimately led to Yale’s 1974 Woodward Report that established free expression principles that have guided Yale and many other American colleges for over 50 years. John, a recent collaborator with leaders at Harvard and other universities under pressure from the current Administration, will discuss the challenges in the intense current environment now faced by well-endowed research universities who seek to reaffirm their commitments to diversity, to preserve and strengthen campus-wide rights to free expression in a climate of rising anti-Semitism, and to sustain their commitments to scientific and medical research, all without jeopardizing or sacrificing their autonomy as independent, free-standing institutions.
