8Y5 | Marc Freedman: Navigating the New Map of Life: Making the Most of Your Next Chapter
We need a new map of life fitted to the new length of life. Over the past century we’ve added 30 years to the American lifespan, but that hasn’t meant simply tacking on decades to the end of life. Rather we’re in the midst of reshaping what a life looks like, including the invention of a new chapter between the middle years and anything representing old age. All too often, our models for thriving in this period of life can be stuck in the past. Just as important, the path from what’s last to what’s next is a rocky one for those moving beyond the middle years. It is time to acknowledge this emerging period, rethink success for the bonus years, and develop the rites and routes of passage required to realize the vast potential—for individuals and for society—of a new phase of life.
