Yale Center for British Art: Picturing Barbados

Join this signature session at the recently reopened Yale Center for British Art!  The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) and the Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH) have partnered with the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and the National Trust UK on a significant collaborative project. Together, they are researching, conserving, and analyzing three of the earliest surviving panoramic paintings of Barbados, held within their respective institutions. The YCBA's "Island of Barbados," attributed to Isaac Sailmaker, is believed to be the earliest known painting of the island among the three. These paintings offer valuable insights into Barbados's history and its depiction during the 17th century under British colonial rule. Recently, experts from the YCBA and IPCH traveled to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society to help conduct research and scientific analysis on its panoramic painting.
