Why We Should Care about K-Pop

This lecture will provide a short introduction to the world of K-Pop, or Korean Pop Music. I focus on music produced by idol groups, including BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, and many others. K-Pop is part of the Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, which along with K-Dramas and Webtoons has brought Korea to the forefront of global cultural producers. I show how this has raised the prominence of South Korea via soft power and ask the prominence of K-Pop can improve the experiences of the Asian diaspora throughout the world. I will share clips of music videos and personal photos from my trips to South Korea. I will also talk about my work as a regular columnist for the Korea Herald, South Korea’s largest English language newspaper.
